How to Care for Your Wedding Flowers

A wedding florist’s job is to make custom floral designs that suit your needs. But once the flowers have been delivered to you, it is your responsibility to keep them looking great for your wedding. At Or' Nat Events & Designs, we’ve compiled some tips on how to take good care of your wedding flowers. Read on to learn how to preserve your wedding flowers.

1.    Cut The Stems

If you’re doing your own flowers, try to trim the stems in a diagonal form (45-degree angle) to ensure the bloom has a clear straw to pull water from. Use size-appropriate vases because a vase that is too big or too small for your bouquets could cause your wedding flowers to wither more quickly.

2.    Keep the flowers hydrated

Flowers need water to maintain their freshness. Most wedding florists deliver bouquets in water-filled vases. If your bouquets are delivered in water-filled vases, allow them to remain in their vases until you absolutely need them, so that they are as hydrated as possible. The vases should be clean, otherwise, a dirty vase will contaminate your flowers and cause them to wilt faster. Keep in mind that the water in the vases should be lukewarm (between 100-110?). Do not use hot water or overly cold water as it can contribute to more dehydration. When it’s time to use the flowers, spray them with a small amount of water to keep the bouquets looking fresh and vibrant.

3.    Avoid touching any blooms directly

While you may be tempted to keep on touching the blooms in admiration, you should be careful not to touch the blooms directly as you could damage delicate petals or transfer substances that could lessen their longevity. Also, you should keep your wedding flowers out of harm’s way by all means. Pets and curious little kids can find their way to where you’ve kept the flowers and rip apart those fragile petals. Make sure that you keep your wedding flowers out of reach of children and pets.

4.    Keep sunlight away!

Wedding flowers wilt quickly when they’re exposed to direct sunlight. By all means, keep the flowers in a cool place away from direct sunlight to prevent withering. Preferably, keep them in a box in a cool space with adequate ventilation. If you use an AC or ceiling fan in your house, ensure air is not blowing on them. Also, make sure that you keep your wedding flowers away from fireplaces, blow dryers, and light fixtures.  There you have it. Consider these tips if you want to keep your wedding flowers fresh and in good shape.
